Gogottes are without any doubt, among the most extraordinary art pieces created by nature. They are exclusively found in Fontainebleau, France. The age of the sand layer Gogottes are found in dates back to approximately 30 million years ago. However the Gogottes itself are formed in two much more recent periods, namely 30.000/50.000 years an 300.00 years ago.

From a geological point of view a Gogotte is a sandstone concretion firmly bonded with siliceous cement. Grains of sand have been semented in place with silica deposited by water circulating within the sand layer.

Chemically speaking a Gogotte consist almost entirely of silica and therefore, has approximately the same composition as a quartz crystal.
